Woman arrested for deadly crash that killed two people has prior DUI

MESA, Ariz. – According to police reports, the woman arrested for a deadly crash that took the lives of two people in Mesa last week has a prior DUI.

35-year-old Ingrid Morataya of Guatemala is facing several charges, including manslaughter, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. She was arrested right after she was released from the hospital.

While Morataya was in the hospital, her family was packing her stuff to send her back to her home country after her discharge. However, she was arrested by the authorities after her release from the hospital.

According to the Mesa police, they suspected Morataya to be impaired when she slammed into a Chevy Malibu that was stopped at a red light. The deadly crash took place at Recker and Brown roads and resulted in a chain reaction in which Jason or ‘Chris’ Aguilera and his girlfriend, Guadalupe Madril, were killed.

Morataya was taken to a hospital after the accident for a blood draw to determine if she had an intoxicant in her system. Officers are awaiting results. According to the officers, Morataya admitted to smoking some marijuana the night before the crash.

Morataya’s friends and family think that her poor mental health was to blame for the crash. They posted several comments on her Facebook page but when news representatives stopped by at Morataya’s house on Tuesday, her family refused to speak.

However, the victims family doesn’t buy the story of Morataya’s mental health problems justifying her actions. Angela Aguilera stated, “She knew what she was doing that day, she knew she was out to hurt somebody.” Aguilera also said that they would just like her to take some responsibility. “I haven’t heard any apology from her family or herself,” she said.

News reports also confirm that Morataya was arrested just a few days before the crash for disorderly conduct. Apparently, she was running up and down her street, knocking on doors and screaming at neighbors according to the arrest paperwork. Officers reported that she was saying things like ‘I can move the moon’ and other ‘strange things.’

According to Aguilera’s family, Morataya’s behavior before the crash is not an excuse for her actions that day. They also said that if Morataya’s family were so concerned about her, they should have done something to keep her from hurting herself as well as others.

After her arrest, Morataya was put in the psych area of the county jail on a $500,000 cash only bond where she is currently being housed.
